President: Jorgen Schousboe is a retired Medical Practitioner and Hon. Consul-General to Denmark. He was born in Denmark and worked in rural India before coming to New Zealand 1973. Jorgen was one of the founding directors of Pegasus Health and the 24hour Surgery in Christchurch. He is passionate about classical music; he plays the piano and enjoys playing chamber music with others.
Secretary Pat Whitman is a former maths teacher who came to New Zealand in 1973 for just two years. She’s still here! Pat has travelled to many diverse places worldwide and seen most of New Zealand as well. Her interests are anything scientific, guiding in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and she is the convenor of the U3A Geology/Botany group.
Vivienne Allan was born in Invercargill. A former journalist, she moved to Christchurch with her husband and family in 1989 working for the Christchurch City Council until 1993 when she moved into the health sector. After completing an MBA (dist.) she managed communications for several government agencies in New Zealand, the NHS in England and the WHO in Switzerland, returning to Christchurch a few months before the 2010 earthquake. She is the author of several books including ‘Go Home and Cook a Meal’ the biography of Mollie McGrade Clark, ‘The History of the Spinal Unit’ at Burwood Hospital, ‘Creating a Legacy of Social Housing’ the story of Housing New Zealand’s five year repair and rebuild programme following the 2011 earthquakes, the biography ‘Leading Lady: Eve Poole, a Life in the Spotlight’, and has recently completed Volume 1 of the history of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association, a revised edition with Volume 2 almost completed.
Roger Chapman. I’ve been a resident on Maffeys Rd for 28 years albeit with a 5-year absence during an earthquake rebuild.
I trained as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in Pathology at Christchurch Hospital and during my career worked in both the public and private sectors. In the mid 90’s I changed my focus to IT in Pathology and for 15 years was IT Manager at Medlab South. In my semi-retirement I have been a contract IT Manager in the Intellectual disability sector and an Operations Manager for the CDHB during the Covid-19 pandemic. I’m a member of Ferrymead Rotary and in my spare time I’m a gardener and golfer, and with grandchildren in Hong Kong and Brisbane my wife Sue and I are supportive grandparents visiting our overseas families whenever possible.
Paul Hammonds, was born in Christchurch. An Anglican Minister for 56 years, Paul is now retired. During his time with the Ministry, he worked in Tanzania for four years. Paul is a member of Probus and belongs to the U3A Pegasus Armchair Travel group and the Geology/Botany group. His main hobbies are walking and reading. Paul has three adult children who all live overseas.
Lyn Russell is a retired administrator/personal assistant. Born in Wellington, she worked in London for several years, and lives in Christchurch by firm choice because of all the City has to offer. A very keen traveller, Lyn is looking forward to starting overseas
adventures again. She loves gardening, walking, films, mahjong, and reading. She is involved in several of the U3A interest groups.
Acting Vice-President Yvonne Boulton was born in Wellington and she trained as a nurse at Dunedin hospital. Her career spanned 53 years, 30 of which was working in healthcare for the elderly focusing on education and rehabilitation. She was one of the founders of accreditation for healthcare services. Yvonne left for her OE in 1968, living in England and South Africa and returned to NZ in 1973. She has travelled widely and has two children who both live in Australia. Some of her interests are music, travel and art and she adores her grandchildren who all live in Australia.
Caroline Carlton, born in Penang Malaysia to English parents, grew up in Christchurch until she started travelling aged 19. She returned here in 2014 with her Australian husband, two children born in Hong Kong and one born in Thailand, many artefacts, and innumerable memories along the way. She feels she is “still waiting to see what she will be when she grows up”. She has had many occupations – PR and advertising jobs in Australia, years of temp work in UK so she could travel more. Six months working on a skifield in Germany, as a journalist for two Saudi publications, Fleet Street London, a clothes business in Hong Kong and the Philippines and a garden design business in Australia. Travel has been a huge part of her life – though there are still places on the bucket list!
Treasurer Sue Beardsley is now retired. She worked for the ANZ Bank for 27 years before moving to Australia with her husband for 17 years. During that time they managed a high rise in Broadbeach and owned a news agency in Currumbin. Sue has travelled widely. She loves gardening, cross-stitching and musical theatre. She is a life member of Showbiz Christchurch.
